It’s not often that I really get to share the reasons behind my passion for photography and what motivates me so recently, I sat down with guest blogger Aideen McCanny who asked me some questions to get to the heart of what I do.

This interview is the ideal read for anyone one wants to know more about what services I offer and how I will endeavour to make your wedding photographs something you will treasure for the rest of your life…

Andrew, how did your business start?

I officially launched my business after leaving a career in the medical world. I have always been passionate about photography and thankfully I was able to use love for image capture to start my new career.

Describe the range of services you offer clients

I offer wedding photography and wedding films, both with a mix of modern and contemporary style. Couples often avail of this convenient joint service as the combination is ideal for capturing every moment of their wedding and of course even better if its in one place.  It is so nice for a couple to rely on one team to capture their amazing photographs and a highlight film of their day with costs of just one company.

What do you enjoy most as a photographer?

I love meeting new people and working with couples on such a special day to capture shared memories they will keep for many years. The technical side of photography interests me massively but it’s always about the people and how they enjoy looking at the photos I have taken for the rest of their lives. I like that my work has a lasting impression and has a special place in people’s homes and lives.

How would you best describe your style of photography?

I offer the perfect mixture between natural, fun, journalistic and creative/posed photography to ensure that every angle is covered and there is a style to suit everyone. A range of photography styles means that my work is always fresh and each wedding album is unique.

And videography?

I use my love of technology to employ modern equipment which allows me to capture wedding film images without large, unsightly old fashioned camera systems. I use movement in a conceptual way to tell the story. I barely use a tripod. Instead, I work with small, steady cameras and slow motion to make cinematic looking films that people will want to watch and share with others.

How do these two services go hand-in-hand?

Working together on the wedding day can not be overstated so having a good understanding within a team is essential. Working as a brand, ensures that look wise, these two services go hand-in-hand. Both look clean, saturated in emotion and timeless.

Who or what inspires you?

My wife, my mum and hard work.  Photography wise…… Donal Dougherty . I like learning everyday and Donal is the kind of person who never stands still, his photography is amazing and his business skills equally impressive.

Describe your approach to weddings.

Fun, fun, style and professionalism. My main aim is always to relax the couple so the pictures are the real them… and beautiful. I love nothing more than receiving thank-you emails from couples thanking me for contributing to their wonderful day rather than just providing a service. This is what drives me. I want to blend in and guide the couple through the day by relaxing them. I also take on the role as reminder… reminding the bride to enjoy her day and not let it go by too fast.

You also offer drone photography, a particularly unique service. Tell us about this.

I have completed all the qualifications to fly and sell the drone as a service. For me it’s about adding something amazing to a wedding film and a stunning panorama picture does just that. This year I have been looking at ways to involve the couple more and more in mini scenes that help to tell the story of their day by using aerial images. The drone itself becomes an event during the day of the wedding with people pouring out of the reception building to see it in action. It adds a little ‘wow’ factor and gets people talking and involved. It’s the perfect way to capture some truly special group shots.

What 3 tips would you offer couples when choosing a wedding photographer?

1) Ensure you like the person, not just the images. There are lots of photographers who take nice photos but you spend more time with your photographer/videographer than anyone else on the day and if you don’t like being in their company it will have a negative effect on your day. 2) Ensure their photography is varied. The wedding day involves many micro events that happen in varied environments and their technical abilities are essential. Look for use of flash and external lighting as well as a mixture of styles. 3) Look for honest communications. Quick replies are good but make sure it’s not an in-personal template response. Get a feeling for genuine communications with your photographer.

What do you love most about videography and why?

Honestly, for me it’s about creating pictures that capture memories and film which brings those memories to life. Video can give you a greater mix of emotions than just a single photograph.  The moment when a farther sees his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time is a classic example of where both photos and video work so well together.  Also I believe that video has adds more fun for the couple viewing after as apposed to the artistic emotion of the still image.   As a minimum having a short highlight film is essential part of the experience for the wedding couple, family and friends.
